Just Tell Them by Zach Groshell takes the reader on a journey to improve classroom participation and student learning. Participants will explore essential techniques grounded in the science of learning to discover how a direct and explicit approach to teaching can significantly impact classroom success.

This book study is a work at your own pace format with questions to answer and submit for 4 PDUs.

Answer the following questions to the best of your ability. Reflecting on the questions and taking the time to answer will be key to benefitting from this book study. The more you truly participate the more benefits you will receive from this book!

Question #1: Reflect and write about your classroom practices in regard to working memory (WM) and long term memory (LTM). What are you doing in your classroom that support WM and LTM? What are you doing that inhibits WM and LTM?

Question #2: Evaluate your use of examples in your classroom. What problems have you run into? What successes?

Question #3: When working to gain student attention, Groshell mentions attention-grabbing stimuli. What are your thoughts on this topic?

Question #4: On pages 24 & 25, Groshell has 8 "antecedent strategies" for the classroom. Think about your classroom. Evaluate each of the 8 strategies in your classroom. What could be improved? What are you doing well?

Question #5: Groshell has some strong feelings about cell phones in the classroom. What are your thoughts and feelings? Why? Please explain.

Question #6: Look at the example of mazy directions on page 31. Analyze some of your directions that you have given for assignments. What can you conclude after reading this section?

Question #7: Think of the "serve and return" or "alternating principle" method of instruction. What are your thoughts on the 9-12 responses per minute? How do you think this would look in your classroom? What would keep you from implementing it?

Question #8: Choral response is a cost-benefit strategy that will include all students dozens of times per lesson and increase learning outcomes. Why do you think teachers don't utilize this technique? Have you ever tried it? Why or Why not? If you have tried it, what was the result? What about some of the other techniques in this section? Thoughts?

Question #9: Explain the importance of examples and non-examples. How can you better incorporate this technique into your classroom?

Question #10: Think about the concept of erroneous mistakes. Imagine what learning would look like for your students if they were introduced to the common errors students at their level make and they can practice spotting the correct and incorrect answers. What are your thoughts about this?

Question #11: Think about the instructional benefit of storytelling, emotional design, and gestures. How can you use them in your classroom?

Question #12: Think about the "I do, we do, you do" process. How would this work in your classroom? Pros? Cons?

Question #13: Mass practice to spaced practice is essential for long term storage of information and concepts. What is your retrieval practice philosophy and strategy?

Question #14: After reading this book, what are your thoughts? What might you be willing to try? What stood out to you?
