We are drawn to cross-cultural ministry and have always found ways to be involved in missions overseas as well as local work with refugees, immigrants, and international students. A few years ago, as we contemplated the reality of our soon-to-be “empty nest” we asked ourselves, and God, if there might be new areas of ministry for us to explore during a new stage of life. Almost immediately we knew that some part of that answer would be overseas. It felt a little bit crazy but also natural so we let ourselves dream a little and started praying, researching, and waiting for the way to open.
We knew we wanted to work with a Christian organization in a facilitating role with an outreach focus on community development or social justice issues. We just didn’t know the Who, What, Where, or When parts of the equation. A couple of people mentioned working with Friends in Kenya and as we looked over this position we cautiously noted that it met our criteria and seemed to fit with our gifts and skills. So, after much prayer, discernment and visiting several of the ministry projects in Kenya we are delighted to be joining FUM in partnering with the African Ministries Office. We are excited to work among Friends alongside John Muhanji and the AMO staff. We look forward to embracing and being embraced by a wider group of Friends and seeing how God will use us together.
