Utah Senate District 5 Constituent Survey- 2016
Are you satisfied with your police protection?
West Valley City residents are served by the West Valley City Police Department. Taylorsville and Kearns residents are served by the Unified Police Department (UPD). I’d like to know if you are satisfied with the police protection you are currently receiving.
Are you satisfied with your fire protection?
West Valley City residents are served by the West Valley City Fire Department. Taylorsville and Kearns residents are served by the Unified Fire Authority (UFA). Just as with police protection, I’d like to know if you are satisfied with the fire services you are currently receiving.
Are you satisfied with your transit choices?
As west side residents, getting around the valley has been a major issue for us. Are you satisfied with our current transportation network (roads, bus, and rail)?
Support for Planned Parenthood Funding
Recently, there has been much discussion and debate about Planned Parenthood’s services here in Utah and nationwide. Governor Herbert has diverted federal funding away from Planned Parenthood. Do you feel this was an appropriate act by the governor?
Are you happy with DABC?
The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (DABC) operates a statewide network of state stores and package agencies that sell all alcoholic beverages, except beer containing less than 4% alcohol by volume. DABC also administers Utah’s liquor laws and regulates the sale and service of alcoholic products. Are you happy with how DABC is run?
Should legislative caucuses meet publicly?
Both the Senate and House Democrats hold public caucus meetings at 11 am every Tuesday and Thursday during the General Session. These meetings are always open to the public. Do you feel that legislative caucuses should discuss the decisions they are making in public?
Should public lands be transferred from the federal government to the state?
I proudly represent District 5, which includes many hunters, fishermen, and people who enjoy outdoor recreation. I come from a family of hunters, fishers, and outdoorsmen. In recent years, there has been a debate about whether public lands currently managed by the federal government should be transferred to the State of Utah, which could then decide whether to close some lands, open some lands, and/or privatize some lands. Do you feel this would jeopardize our ability to have free access to the hunting and fishing we currently enjoy?
How do you feel about earmarks?
Governor Herbert and some legislators are discussing removing earmarks from the budget in order to give more flexibility in spending. These earmarks direct funding to specific projects and programs to ensure they are funded prior to the Legislature begins to set the budget. Do you feel that funding should be set aside for specific projects?
What are your thoughts on growth in District 5?
District 5 is booming! New developments have sprung up all over and many more are planned in Kearns, Taylorsville, and West Valley City. Everything from small businesses to big box stores, to new manufacturing is coming to our area. Do you have any comments on what has been built? On what is planned? What type of development would you like to see in our community?
