Save the ANU School of Music

The Australian National University has proposed major structural changes to the School of Music as part of the "Renew ANU" organisational change process [available here]. These changes include but are not limited to
  • The closure of the standalone School of Music and merging it into a new school, ANU School of Creative and Cultural Practice. (Page 9 of the Organisational Change Proposal)
  • The removal of one-to-one instrumental tuition. (Page 10)

  • The restructure of academic positions, which include the disestablishment of teaching positions such as a dedicated Head of School for the School of Music (Pages 10 and 27) amongst Lecturers and Senior Lecturers in Jazz, Piano, Composition, and Music. (Pages 26 - 28)

These changes will directly impact the Bachelor of Music program, with widespread impacts anticipated across Canberra’s music scene, arts education, and creative industries. The changes will leave Canberra with no viable tertiary music program forcing students and musicians interstate.

We express our support for the student demands:
  • The current Vice-Chancellor to step down or be removed
  • The cuts to staff and courses must stop immediately
  • We demand full funding for public education so these cuts do not need to happen in the future.
