Magnet School Admission Procedures Community Feedback
Purpose: To receive critical insights from VUSD community members which is related to the VUSD Magnet School Admission Procedure with a focus on a clear, fair, and balanced approach. Feedback will provide further clarification from community members that will inform the procedures we follow for Magnet School admission for the 2018 – 19 school year. All responses are open-ended, so please feel free to share your thoughts on the followings topics and current procedures.
TIMELINE: Submission of Magnet School application between early January and middle of February, with Lottery conducted by end of February. What is your feedback on this?

PRIORITY STUDENTS: (1) Sibling of current student, (2) Parent is a VUSD employee, (3) Grade 5 or Grade 8 and currently attending a Magnet School, (4) Parent is active military, (5) Foster / Homeless students. What is your feedback on this?

LOTTERY: The Lottery is comprised of four (4) pools of students - students who reside in (1) Rancho Minerva MS boundary, (2) Madison MS boundary, (3) Roosevelt MS boundary, and (4) outside of VUSD boundary. Each pool is randomly assigned a place in the drawing order (one through four). A random number generator is used to assign student drawing number within each pool. Each grade level for each school is filled to capacity. Students not selected are placed on a waitlist according to their selected school and grade level based on lottery number. What is your feedback on this?

DISTRIBUTION: An even distribution of students is selected from each pool resulting in an overall selection of 25% of students from each pool. What is your feedback on this?

GRADES K-8 PROCEDURE: All applicants are notified of their status: accepted or placed on waitlist. Parents have three (3) workdays in which to submit to the Magnet School site a Participation Agreement Form and a VUSD Student Registration Form. If student receives more than one offer, they can accept only one offer; all other Magnet School admission offers are rescinded. If the deadline is missed, the offer is rescinded. What is your feedback on this?

MVHS PROCEDURE: All applicants are notified of their status - accepted or placed on waitlist. Students who are accepted and currently attending a VUSD school are automatically enrolled in MVHS. Parents of students who do not currently attend a VUSD school will have three (3) workdays in which to submit to MVHS a Participation Agreement Form and three (3) weeks from the date of notice to submit all registration paperwork. If the deadline is missed, the offer is rescinded. What is your feedback on this?
