Join the Gael Dancers! Founded in 1998, the Gael Dancers function as an engaging entertainment group that prepares dance routines for performances and Iona's sporting and social events.
FALL auditions will be held on Saturday, September 7th from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM in Hegarty Room in Hynes West (arrive at least 15 minutes before to check in). Dancers should be able to execute intermediate to advanced level turns, leaps, and kicks as well as performance skills.
The team consists of 15-25 spots including those for returning dancers. However, the total number is at the discretion of the coach. Veteran members are required to tryout each year. Dancers are notified on the day of the auditions as to whether they have made the team.
Skill Requirements:
-At least a double pirouette and a la second turns are REQUIRED
-Proficiency in the following skills: leaps, including side leaps, toe touch, calypsos, and flexibility
-Additional skills that are recommended, but NOT required, kip up, head spring, and any tumbling
Tryout Requirements:
-Complete the below registration form
-Form fitting black dance clothing
-Jazz shoes & Sneakers
-Hair = slicked back and out of your face
-Makeup = glamorous, clean and professional
-Current headshot photo
All Iona University incoming, undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to audition.
Performances
-The Dance Team performs on campus including Iona Men's and Women's Basketball games and at various campus and local events.
-We compete at UDA Nationals in Orlando in January
-We travel to the MAAC Tournament in March in Atlantic City
Responsibilities
Dance Team members should attain the necessary athletic skills, team oriented and have school spirit. Members must be dedicated to representing the school and their team in a professional manner. Being a part of the Dance Team is a rewarding and fun experience, but also comes with commitment to ALL practices, games, and performances. Each dancer is required to maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.
Time Commitment
-Full year commitment
-3 practices a week: Tuesday & Thursdays: 7:00-10:00 p.m. and Sundays: 5-8 p.m.
-2-3 Summer Practices
-Weekly running and conditioning all year
-Attendance at weekly games, which include home Men and Women's Basketball games, monthly team bonding, and monthly community services events
