2018 U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad Exams
To: Chemistry and Science teachers, Administrators, and Interested Students
From: Portland Local Section of the American Chemical Society

NOTE: These instructions are for both TEACHERS and STUDENTS who would like to participate in the 2018 U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad administered by the Portland ACS.

The U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) program is an event that encourages participation and competition for high school students. The purpose of the competition is to stimulate young people to achieve excellence in chemistry. The Portland Section of the American Chemical Society has sponsored the program since 1984.

Participation in the local Olympiad is open to all high school students. Students can review past Local Exams <https://tinyurl.com/Local-Exams-2000-2017> to study for their local competition.

The teacher may administer the exam, which may be proctored at the chemistry teacher's school or the student can take the exam at Clackamas Community College on Saturday March 17.

If you are a High School Administrator receiving this email we urge you to forward this information to your science or chemistry teacher(s) and recommend that teachers urge students to participate in the event.

There are two exams: the first exam — the local Chemistry Olympiad Competition — may be taken by any high school student. The second exam -- the national exam -- is given by invitation only to those students with qualifying scores. The Portland Section Chemistry Olympiad coordinator, Dr. Nicolas Hamel, scores exams and chooses nominees for the second exam -- the national exam -- based on scores from the first exam.

Please do NOT contact Dr. Hamel directly. Instead, complete the form below. Direct all questions to Jean Eames <djeames75@gmail.com> or Martha Dibblee <martha@acsportland.org>.

FOR TEACHERS: You proctor the Chemistry Olympiad Exam at your school during the month of March. If you cannot proctor the exam at your school, students can take the exam at Clackamas Community College on March 17.
