Portland Public Schools Health and PE Department along with the REAHL Initiative have recently partnered with OHA and ODE to improve the health of elementary students by training teachers to provide skills-based health education and curricular integration. In April OHA awarded PPS $883,000 for “Health for K-5,” an initiative to train teachers serving K-5 students across the state. Health for K-5 will help OHA meet its goals of promoting positive behavioral health outcomes and preventing substance use and abuse by reaching thousands of students and families throughout Oregon.

H.E.A.L.T.H for K-5 is a multi-pronged, grant-funded prevention project designed to encourage healthy behavior outcomes by providing children with the skills they need to take control of their health in an age-appropriate manner.

The two-day Institute will include training on:

Teaching skills-based Health Education to elementary students
Best practices in Health Education
Oregon Health Education Standards review
Skills-based health education and curricular integration
Break-out sessions, planning time and collaboration
Partnering with community organizations to support health education in schools
