Over two days in mid-August 2021, our Kettle Lakes received more than 8 inches of rain resulting in storm run-off that caused significant flooding. We were hit a second time at the end of October. These flood events resulted in septic contamination of wells, damage to docks and watercraft, road washouts and other damaging consequences. Since this rain occurred at the end of the fall, the trees had already shut down for the winter and therefore the water has stayed with us all winter. As we move into spring, our water levels are high, heightening our risk of more flooding this spring. As a community, our lake residents pulled together and helped where needed. We learned that we must prepare for a world where this may become more common.
