Join the Great Cities Institute for a special book panel featuring How We Came to Be: An Intellectual Genealogy of Chicano Scholars. The conversation will explore the lives, scholarship, and enduring legacies of Chicana and Chicano scholars whose experiences in the Chicano Movement helped shape the development of Chicano studies and transform higher education.
The panel will feature Dr. Avelardo Valdez, Dr. Teresa Córdova, and Juan González, who will reflect on the book’s intellectual and personal histories and discuss the connections between activism, scholarship, institutional change, and community-engaged research. Drawing from the volume’s sixteen essays, the conversation will consider how generations of Chicana and Chicano scholars built academic programs, expanded representation in higher education, and developed new approaches to research, teaching, leadership, and social justice.
