Band Selection
The Minnesota Freedom Band is expanding to offer two separate concert bands for the 2026-27 season. Both bands will be conducted by Bethany Doffing and will explore a rich variety of musical styles and genres.

Symphonic Band
  • Rehearsals: Monday evenings at South High School in Minneapolis
  • No audition required - open to all musicians regardless of skill level or experience
  • Wide variety of music styles and genres
Wind Ensemble
  • Rehearsals: Wednesday evenings at South High School in Minneapolis
  • No audition required - for musicians proficient with Grade 3.5-6 band literature
  • Wide variety of music styles and genres

Key Information & Guidelines
  • No auditions are required for either concert band.
  • Musicians may join only one concert band. The Director may approve exceptions for instrumentation balance or for members playing two different instruments.
  • Members of either concert band are welcome to also participate in small ensembles (no audition) and/or the Jazz Band (audition required).
To help you choose the right fit, and Open House Week will be held at the start of the season. Prospective members are invited to attend rehearsals of both bands before making their selection.

Band assignments are for the semester. Switching between bands is permitted in September (for the fall semester) and January (for the spring semester), but not at other times.


Freedom Jazz
Freedom Jazz is a 20-piece Big Band style band. Auditions are required to joint his ensemble, with a special emphasis on sight reading and improvisation.

The Minnesota Freedom Band is run by volunteers. There are plenty of opportunities for you to get involved! Please check the areas that interest you or that you have a skill or talent you are willing to share.
Membership Dues
Membership Dues for the 2026-27 season are as follows:

Symphonic Band only dues: $120
Wind Ensemble only dues: $120
Freedom Jazz only dues: $120
Combined dues for members who play in two or more bands: $200

Member dues are payable by your third rehearsal.

MFB does not turn away members because of an inability to pay dues. Scholarships and payment plans are available. Please contact our Treasurer at treasurer@minnesotafreedomband.org for more information.
