Health Equity Course Participant Sign-Up

This self-paced, virtual course is designed to provide basic scientists with essential tools to incorporate health equity into their research practices. The course takes place during the Fall ‘24- Winter ‘25 Health Equity Seminar Series, beginning the week of November 18th, 2024.

The target audience for this course are basic science research graduate students, postdocs, associate research scientists, and early career faculty.


This Health Equity Course is brought to you by the Diversity & Inclusion in Scientific Research Underpinning Prevention & Therapy Trials (DISRUPT) project, funded by Stand Up To Cancer. DISRUPT is focused on addressing cancer health inequities that disproportionately affect Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. DISRUPT brings together multidisciplinary teams from four New York City institutions: Albert Einstein Cancer Center, Columbia’s Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, Mount Sinai’s Tisch Cancer Institute, and The City College of New York.

Do you conduct (or have you conducted) basic science research? 

Basic science research—often called fundamental or bench research—provides the foundation of knowledge for the applied science that follows. This type of research encompasses familiar scientific disciplines such as biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, and pharmacology, and their interplay, and involves laboratory studies with cell cultures, animal studies or physiological experiments. Basic science also increasingly extends to behavioral and social sciences as well, which have no less profound relevance for medicine and health.

This course consists of four thematic modules, each consisting of 2-4 topics each. Each topic has a video that is at least 20 minutes long, along with a powerpoint presentation and potentially additional reading materials or resources. There are also two Zoom sessions that will take place during an evening during the week of December 2nd and another during the week of January 27th.
