Weight Stigma - Examples of lived experience within health and social care
As we move on to the next stage of development of the Public Health Scotland 'Addressing Weight Stigma' e-Learning resource, we plan to include a number of fictional scenarios that draw from both people with lived experience of obesity/higher body weight and healthcare professionals – these scenarios will form the basis of a number of reflective activities we have planned to include in the module, which we hope will really bring the subject matter to life.

We are looking for people to submit a brief description (200-300 words max) of the experiences below. Please don’t worry about scripting something perfectly, just describe what happened, how it made you feel, and what happened as a consequence. Please note that we will **not** use your stories in the training – rather, they may inform the writing of different fictional scenarios to make the training as realistic as we can.

- People with lived experience of obesity/higher body weight: Describe a time when you felt stigmatised in a health care setting or felt badly treated because of your weight? Do you have any examples of when a condition/illness went undiagnosed because there was an undue focus on your weight and/or because of past negative experiences you delayed or avoided care? Do you have any examples of positive experiences of care which you would like to share?

- Experience from a health and social care professionals: Describe a time when you attempted to raise the issue of weight and you felt this went badly? Is there anything you’ve done in the delivery of care to someone with a higher body weight that you’ve since regretted? Have you made any changes to your approach following this/other experiences which have improved the delivery of care to people with higher body weights? Are their any systems or practices in your service which you think unfairly discriminates people with a higher body weight?

Please feel free to cascade this far and wide – we would love to be able to capture a diverse range of experiences. Responses submitted here will come directly to suzanne.connolly4@phs.scot. Please know that your stories and contributions will be handled with the utmost respect, sensitivity, and confidentiality.

We would be grateful for any submissions by Wednesday 11th August 2021.

Thank you for ongoing support with this work.
