Survey on the Use of FAO Open Source Geo-Spatial Tools
Introductory Note: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is providing technical support to the implementation of a project entitled “Global Transformation of Forests for People and Climate: a focus on West Africa” for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). (http://www.fao.org/3/ca6102en/ca6102en.pdf)
The project is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
Under output 1.1 “Existing forest related data in the sub-region is assessed and new data is generated to cover critical data gaps on forest status and dynamics”, one deliverable of the project is concerned with undertaking forest and land use/land cover change analysis using remote sensing/GIS technology.  FAO has developed within the OpenForis initiative (www.openforis.org) a variety of free and open source technical solutions such as Collect Earth, Collect Earth Online or SEPAL, as well as standards like the Land Cover Meta-Language (LCML-LCCS) to assist countries in their efforts to measure, monitor and report on their forests. In order to help us better design a capacity building programme, we will need to assess your level of mastery of those tools. Please, provide us with an honest evaluation of the tools by answering the following questions below. It will take you just a few minutes.

1. The FAO’s Land Cover Classification System (LCCS.v3/LCML) can be used to translate national classifications/map legends into common (reliable and consistent) formats that can be aggregated at regional level.   For this project, you will be required to master this tool. Please,  rate your level of knowledge on the use of this tool: *
If you have used LCCS-V3, please specify in which context
2. Open Foris Collect Earth tool is used to assess land use/land cover and change through visual interpretation of very-high-resolution satellite imagery available in Google Earth (GE), Google Earth Engine (GEE), Bing Maps, Here Maps and other. For this project, you will be required to master this tool. Please,  rate your level of knowledge on the use of this tool: *

3. Collect Earth Online (CEO) is a powerful online platform for performing sample-based image interpretation, through visualization and classification of multiple high resolution imagery. It can be implemented as a stand alone tool or within SEPAL *
4. SEPAL (System for Earth Observation Data Access, Processing and Analysis for Land Monitoring) is an open-source, cloud-based system that provides a platform for users to access huge satellite data, and to process and store huge datasets for land monitoring. In the present study you will be expected to use Sepal to produce map mosaics, undertake land cover classifications and perform change detection, stratified area accuracy estimation for your countries.  Please provide your rating on your level of knowledge/mastery of the Sepal platform (in general) and various geo-spatial analysis. *

5. Programming languages: The tools in OpenForis have been designed to limit required programming skills for users. However, a knowledge in one or more programming languages can facilitate understanding of the backend applications. Can you provide a rating of your level in the following programming languages? *

9. Do you have a better internet connectivity in the office than at home? *
10. If an online event is organized can you provide an estimate of how many technical staff, in addition to yourself can attend? *
