Youth Membership Agreement
At Decatur Makers, we welcome makers of all ages. We are pleased to be able to offer "Student Memberships" to the younger makers in our community.  

Young makers are eligible for a "Youth Membership" between the ages of 11-17 years old. Youth Members are considered to be full members of Decatur Makers in good standing as long as they adhere to the following specific policies:

Youth Member Policies:
Parent / Guardian and Youth Member, please type your initials after each policy to confirm you have read and understood it:
Youth Members are expected to follow all rules and policies as defined in the Decatur Makers Code of Conduct, Community Agreement, and the Members Handbook. *
Youth Members between the ages of 11-13 years old, must be accompanied by a parent or 21+ guardian at all times in and around the Decatur Makers makerspace. *
Youth Members between the ages of 14-17 years old, may be unaccompanied in and around the Decatur Makers makerspace, as long as their parent or legal guardian has signed with specific approval.   *
Youth Members under 18 years old, may at no time bring guests under 21 years of age. *
Youth Members under 18 years old, may at no time utilize power equipment and tools on which they have not completed a safety check by Decatur Makers Staff or Area Stewards. *

Youth Woodshop Access and Equipment Usage Policy

Age Restrictions:

No one under the age of 7 is allowed to enter the woodshop under any circumstances.

Individuals aged 7-14 may enter the woodshop and use the equipment only with the required assistance of a Decatur Makers Woodshop Trained Adult**.

Members aged 14-17 who have attended the Decatur Makers' New Member Orientation and Tool Specific Training are permitted to enter the woodshop and utilize equipment using the buddy system*.

Non Members or members, aged 14-17, who have not completed Decatur Makers' New Member Orientation and Tool Specific Training may enter the woodshop and equipment only when assisted by a Trained Adult who has completed the applicable training. 

*The buddy system involves two individuals working together, keeping each other in sight, and providing assistance when needed.

**A Trained Adult is any member who is over the age of 18 who has undergone Decatur Makers' New Member Orientation and Tool Specific Training.

Equipment Access Age Requirements: 

Ages 7-13: Children aged 7-13 are permitted to utilize woodshop equipment only under the supervision of a trained parent or guardian. However, individuals within this age range are absolutely prohibited from operating the following equipment under any circumstances:

Jointer 

Router Table

Resaw Bandsaw

Table Saw

Planer

 Ages 11-13

Shaper

Jointer

Router Table

Resaw Bandsaw

All individuals, regardless of age, must wear appropriate safety gear, including safety goggles, ear protection, and closed-toe shoes.

Behavior Expectations:

a. All woodshop participants must adhere to posted rules and guidelines.

b. Disruptive behavior may result in immediate removal from the woodshop.

Non-compliance with these policies may result in a suspension of woodshop privileges.

Youth Members under 18 years old, may not enter or utilize any of the tools or equipment in the Woodshop or Metal Working area of the Decatur Makers makerspace without direct supervision an 21+ adult parent, guardian, volunteer officer or Decatur Makers staff member. *
Accountability for Youth Members:
Parent / Guardian and Youth Member, please type your initials after each policy to confirm you have read and understood it:
Youth Members who are found in violation of any of the outlined policies, will be given the opportunity to work with Decatur Makers staff to create a plan for improvement. If plans for improvement prove to be unsuccessful, after three violations, Decatur Makers reserves the right to restrict access to the makerspace or remove all of a youth member privileges through the cancellation of their membership.       *
