Youth Woodshop Access and Equipment Usage Policy
Age Restrictions:
No one under the age of 7 is allowed to enter the woodshop under any circumstances.
Individuals aged 7-14 may enter the woodshop and use the equipment only with the required assistance of a Decatur Makers Woodshop Trained Adult**.
Members aged 14-17 who have attended the Decatur Makers' New Member Orientation and Tool Specific Training are permitted to enter the woodshop and utilize equipment using the buddy system*.
Non Members or members, aged 14-17, who have not completed Decatur Makers' New Member Orientation and Tool Specific Training may enter the woodshop and equipment only when assisted by a Trained Adult who has completed the applicable training.
*The buddy system involves two individuals working together, keeping each other in sight, and providing assistance when needed.
**A Trained Adult is any member who is over the age of 18 who has undergone Decatur Makers' New Member Orientation and Tool Specific Training.
Equipment Access Age Requirements:
Ages 7-13: Children aged 7-13 are permitted to utilize woodshop equipment only under the supervision of a trained parent or guardian. However, individuals within this age range are absolutely prohibited from operating the following equipment under any circumstances:
Ages 7-10
Shaper
Jointer
Router Table
Resaw Bandsaw
Table Saw
Planer
Ages 11-13
Shaper
Jointer
Router Table
Resaw Bandsaw
All individuals, regardless of age, must wear appropriate safety gear, including safety goggles, ear protection, and closed-toe shoes.
Behavior Expectations:
a. All woodshop participants must adhere to posted rules and guidelines.
b. Disruptive behavior may result in immediate removal from the woodshop.
Non-compliance with these policies may result in a suspension of woodshop privileges.
