Introduction to American Folk Music - Reserve Your Spot!
Sometimes referred to as Appalachian, roots, mountain, hillbilly, or old-timey, folk music laid the foundation for country, rock, gospel, and today's Americana music. Derived mostly from the traditional songs of the British Isles, American folk music was filtered through the various regions of the Appalachians and Americanized as the songs and the melodies were passed down through many generations. This course will present songs that have withstood this journey and are sung to this day, as well as songs that carry on this folk process. Students do not need to be able to play an instrument, but are welcome to bring them.

Students will learn the characteristics of folk music and sing simple traditional and contemporary folk songs of various genres such as "This Land is Your Land," "The Cuckoo," "You Are My Sunshine," "Red River Valley," "I"ll Fly Away," etc. Students are encouraged to bring songs in the folk genre - traditional or original - to share with the class. Students will have an opportunity to perform selected songs in a public recital at the conclusion of the course.
