PE remains a priority and requirement for high school graduation in Johnston, it is our responsibility to make you aware of a state law which includes additional options for exemptions to the PE requirement. Senate File 391 outlines situations where PE may be excused in grades 9-12 when one of these criterion is met:
To enroll in academic courses not otherwise available to the student.
To enroll in a work-based learning program or other educational program authorized by the school which requires the student to leave the school premises during the school day, such as off-site DMACC classes or School to Work Program.
If a student is involved in a school sponsored activity/sport which requires at least as much physical activity per week as one-eighth unit of physical education such as being a member of an athletic team, show choir, marching band or color guard.
In Johnston, we have PE every day for a semester, or every other day over the course of a year.
To be consistent with either model, we have established the amount of time spent in PE to be approximately 66 hours to receive credit for PE, regardless of the delivery model students select.
The student is enrolled in a junior reserve officers’ training corps (ROTC)
If your child meets the criteria to be exempted from PE during the 2024-2025 school year at JMS (9th grade) or JHS, please complete this form. Students can always make the choice to take PE as usual.
Thank you!
