From medical care to food, training and many different products (beds/toys/scratching post etc), the costs of having a pet can add up and need to be fully considered before committing to an adoption. Have you taken the above into consideration? *
Do you know/have a trusted veterinarian in your area? (please check that they are also used to foreign rescues)  *
Are you financially in the position to cover regular veterinary health  checks, yearly vaccinations and potential unexpected visits to the vets? *
If the dog/cat you are applying for is already in the UK, are you prepared to travel to their foster home to pick them up? If so, how far? *
Some Rescues adapt to their new lives easily ... but some don't and may struggle to adjust. Adopters need to be prepared to give them the time they need (which may be weeks) and help them along the way to build trust. Are you ready for this? *
Unwanted behaviour (from separation anxiety to
excessive barking or reactivity) may appear. If it does, please DO NOT hope that this will go away by itself because it won’t.
Training can take time, patience and consistency and one needs to be prepared for that (including engaging a professional behaviourist). Are you prepared for this?
*
Dogs need socialisation and the right amount of exercise (some more than others).
If their needs are not met, they will redirect their boredom to things normally people get frustrated with (like chewing or disruptive behaviour around the house) - It is not their fault, it is their natural response to lack of stimulation and exercise.
Cats have their needs to.
Have you got the time and are you able to provide this for your pet?
*
Are you aware that for the first few weeks, your rescue may suffer of depression? (particularly if they are now the only resident pet - as they went from what they knew, living 24hrs with others of their kind, to a totally new and unknown place) *
Are you aware that there will be a transition period where a dog may show unwanted behaviours such as biting/chewing furniture or items, toilet accidents in the home, excessive barking, howling as they feel lost, unable to sleep at night or develop reactivity? (this can happen particularly during their secondary fear phase, which is part of their natural development -  between 6-14 months of age)  *
Do you have any experience with dog behavioural issues? If so, which? *
If the dog demonstrates any behavioural signs that you are not comfortable with, are you willing to seek professional help before looking for alternative solutions, such as finding a new home?
PLEASE ensure that any professional has the correct qualifications and is knowledgeable about foreign rescues
*
Are you willing to contact us before making any re-homing decision? *
Do you crate train? Please tell us how you feel about it and the reason for that? *
Will you agree to sign an Adoption Agreement where you commit to the full Terms & Conditions of an adoption? *
Are you willing to join our Adoption closed group on fb and share from time to time videos and photos of your adopted pet? *
Post-adoption, are you comfortable with visits from one of our volunteers to check if everything is as we have agreed on?
*
Please name 2 people who can provide a reference for you (and their email address)  *
When the dog/cat reach their new homes, they have gone through a series of changes, such as separating from their shelter friends, traveling for 2-3 days for the first time on a vehicle, moving to a new home with new people/smells/noises. You must understand that all these changes may shock them and may need time to deal with this.
They are almost always overwhelmed and often frightened, which could lead to defensive actions that can be misinterpreted as aggressive. This behaviour is not the behaviour that defines the dog/cat nature, and you must give them the space and time to 'decompress' and re-balance within.
Boundaries and routine must be set soon after so you and your pet can build a bond and be happy together. Are you prepared to follow this advice?
*
Dogs/cats who have been assessed with other dogs/cat can still be reactive to resident animals. With cats, it can take up 2-6 months for the animals to feel ok with each other. With dogs, it can take about 1-2 months (please do feed them separately during this time too). Are you happy with this advice? *
*
You have our FULL support for any issues that may occur with the adopted rescue and lifetime back-up, however it is important to understand that Adopters have the main responsibility for how the dog/cat settles and behaves in their home and with the family. Do you agree with this?
