Phone-Free BVSD 
We are a group of BVSD parents advocating to eliminate student access to cell phones during the school day. We're asking the district to implement a policy across middle schools and high schools that would have students place their phones in locked pouches or lockers for the duration of the school day. Students would still have access to their phones before and after school. 

Our goal is to improve our kids' academic, social, and emotional well-being by eliminating the distractions and dramas that cell phones at school are increasingly proven to cause. A Common Sense Media study found that 97% of students aged 11-17 used their phone during the school day, for a median time of 47 minutes. Researchers at the University of Texas and Louisiana State University found that exam scores climbed by as much as 6% in schools that imposed strict phone-free policies.

In addition to advocating for a phone-free BVSD policy, we are also mobilizing parents and caregivers to sign the "Wait Until 8th Pledge." By signing the pledge at the link below, you promise not to give your child a smartphone (internet, social media) until at least the end of 8th grade as long as at least 10 families total from your child’s grade and school pledge. If you would like your child to have a basic phone that just calls and texts, you still can sign the pledge! Once 10 families have pledged, you will be notified that the pledge is in effect. Wait Until 8th will email you and the other parents who have signed from your child’s grade to connect you with each other.  Working together as a community we can promote safer alternatives to social media and more meaningful ways for our kids to interact with their friends.
