EA talent needs survey - 2017
This survey is aimed to help 80,000 Hours, CEA and the community as a whole fill your talent and funding gaps.

Note many questions are optional. If you find yourself stalled on a question and it's going to make you less likely to finish the survey and submit, feel free to skip it.

If you don't have an organisational affiliation just answer the questions that still make sense for individuals to answer.

If you notice any problems/ambiguities please email Rob at robertwiblin@gmail.com with urgent in the subject line so I can fix it immediately.

Required
What types of talent does your organisation most need more of? (Pick up to 6)
Feel free to add anything we didn't list above, e.g. experts in anthropology, people with extensive corporate experience, etc.
What types of talent do we need more in EA as a whole? (Pick up to 6)
Feel free to add anything we didn't list above, e.g. experts in anthropology, people with extensive corporate experience, etc.
In close calls, what personal qualities do your decisions to hire or not hire someone most often turn on? (Pick up to 3)
If you were trialling someone, what is it that you would look for most, or be most worried about? Feel free to add other criteria.
(Totally optional) Any other comments on what we need more of in the community, or what characteristics or lack thereof most often hold people back from usefully contributing?
Imagine a donation of $1,000 to the EA Community Funds. In your view, this is equally as valuable for the world as a pure donation of $X to the Global Health EA Fund. Or a donation of $Y to the Long-Term Future Fund EA Fund. Or a donation of $Z to the Animal Welfare EA Fund.
Try to estimate, X, Y and Z separately below. You aren't expected to do original research - just give your current overall judgement.
(Optional) Which problems beyond those already addressed by the four EA Funds above do you think are highest-priority for the community to research and work to solve?
For what value of X would your organisation be indifferent between $100,000 now and $X in 3 years?
Assume you couldn't borrow on the basis of the expected future income.
For a typical recent *Senior* hire, how much financial compensation would you have needed to receive today, to make you indifferent about one of them not having been available for you or anyone to hire for a further 3 years?
A senior hire is roughly a founder, or manager with 5 years’ relevant experience. Imagine that in the meantime the person neither gains nor loses skills (they reappear in 3 years the same as today). If you haven't hired anyone like this recently, imagine what you would answer for a likely hire you might make in the next year.
For a typical recent *Junior* hire, how much financial compensation would you have needed to receive today, to make you indifferent about one of them not having been available for you or anyone to hire for a further 3 years?
A junior hire is roughly an entry level employee after 6-12 months of experience. Imagine that in the meantime the person neither gains nor loses skills (they reappear in 3 years the same as today). If you haven't hired anyone like this recently, imagine what you would answer for a likely hire you might make in the next year.
Overall, how funding constrained are you?
1 is that how much things cost is never a practical limiting factor for you. 5 would be that you are considering shrinking to avoid running out of money.
Not at all funding constrained
Very funding constrained
Overall, how talent constrained are you?
1 would be that you could hire many outstanding candidates who want to work at your org if you chose to or had the money. 5 would be that you can't get any people you need to grow, and might even be losing the good people you have. NOTE: You can be neither funding nor talent constrained if you're instead limited by something like the ability to absorb people into the organisation and figure out what to do.
Not at all talent constrained
Very talent constrained
(Optional) Only answer this question if you answered 4 or 5 on the previous question: If you tried to spend more money on attracting talent what might you do? Would you raise salaries? Would there be negative side effects which stop you from doing whatever those things are (e.g. increasing costs for existing employees)?
(Optional) If your funding doubled for the next 3 years (vs staying constant) that would result in you accomplishing X% more good for the world over the next 3 years?
Estimate X as best you can.
(Optional) If your quality-adjusted pool of applicants doubled for the next 3 years (vs staying constant) that would result in you accomplishing X% more good for the world over the next 3 years?"
Estimate X as best you can.
(Optional) Are there any ways in particular that CEA/80K could help you get the talent or funding you need?
