The amount of travel time will always depend on where the club is and where you start from (home, university etc). We are opening new clubs all the time and always aim to help our Language Guides by offering somewhere to work with as short a journey as possible.
Most of our clubs are after the school day at 1530 but some are 0800 - 0900 and others fit into the main school timetable. It's important we know when you are available. You will always need to arrive a few minutes early and be prepared to stay until the children are collected by their parents.
The rate for Language Guides ranges from £15 - 25 per hour depending on experience, the level of responsibility and where the club takes place. We recruit Assistant and Lead Language Guides, with different responsibilities.
Due to the nature of the work, all Language Guides must have an Enhanced DBS (we help with this) and Level 2 Safeguarding for Children (we provide this course before you begin). All interviews take place in person at our London office, where you will have to provide ID, proof of address and right to work in the UK. You will also have to provide us with at least two references that we can check.
Please note that Speak Like A Native is not a school and we do not offer “full time” positions. Our clubs are located in primary schools across London and Essex. You need to be able to get to the schools where we operate and be available at the specific time the clubs operate.
A typical contract during term time may be for 1 - 5 hours per week.
The children come to our clubs because their parents send them! It’s our responsibility to make sure that they are safe at all times and that they enjoy every session. We don’t formally “teach” the children a foreign language but engage them in games, tasks and activities that are fun … and do everything in the target language. We don’t use the term teacher, instructor or tutor but refer to the wonderful and enthusiastic people who run our clubs as Language Guides.
Working for Speak Like A Native as a Language Guide will suit somebody who is passionate about working with children aged 5 - 11 and wants to use their language skills. As our clubs are in schools spread across London and Essex and generally take place at 15.30, we cannot offer “full-time” work. Our Language Guides are usually studying or also working somewhere else and see the opportunity of building their classroom experience and enhancing their CV. We offer continual training and development as well as support in safeguarding for children.
We are interested in qualified teachers as well as trainee / future teachers or people with some experience working with children (e.g. summer camps, sporting activities etc).
Even if you have sent us a CV, you will need to complete this application form to be considered for an interview. All interviews take place in person at our London office.
