Alumni: Support Princeton's fight for academic freedom.
April 3, 2025

The Trump administration has unlawfully frozen dozens of federal grants to our alma mater. The total amount frozen is reportedly $210 million.

There is no need to rehash here the threat this act and those directed at other universities pose to freedom of speech and academic freedom at Princeton and on campuses everywhere. You can refer to statements by President Eisgruber and constitutional law scholars, both liberal and conservative. For its part, Princeton appears committed to fight back.

In recent years our Annual Giving donations have totaled roughly $70 million each year. It is within our reach to replace the grants that are being unlawfully cancelled. With a community of 100,000 alumni, we can do so at a cost of $2,100 per person.

Join your fellow Tigers in committing to donate $2,100 (or such greater or lesser amount as you are able) in support of the university hewing to its principles. If the university has not dealt with the government other than through litigation or proper legal channels, then we commit to make our donations before June 30, 2025, the last day of this year's Annual Giving campaign.

By making (and keeping) your commitment, you do your part to:
  1. Support the university's efforts to resist unlawful intimidation,
  2. Alleviate the impact on students and researchers, and
  3. Send a message that Princetonians remain committed to the values underpinning our great American universities and encourage alumni of other schools to do the same.
You may make your commitment publicly or anonymously, but we ask that you provide your degree and class year. We will only publish the names of those who wish to be identified after we have received 100 public commitments.

Thank you for remaining ever "in the nation's service."
