Stop the Inhumanity! Catholic organizations are organizing a nonviolent campaign to end the traumatizing abuse of immigrant children and their families by the U.S. government. Phase three is a national prayerful direct action in El Paso, TX. National organizations are following the lead of local groups in El Paso, such as Hope Border Institute and a committee of national Hispanic Catholic leaders. In solidarity, we will stand with them as they lift up their local concerns about the immigration system and racism in El Paso.
Anyone from around the country is invited, even those who are not Catholic. The event will include prayer, ritual, and a call to action by Catholic leaders. Because of the urgency and depth of the injustice we will also generate some creative tension and healthy disruption of the status quo during the action.
This event follows a powerful mobilization of Catholic faith leaders who launched the campaign in Washington DC, on July 18, a follow-up national action in Newark, NJ on Sept. 4 with Cardinal Tobin, as well as local actions. Since the start of this campaign, there has been a release of over 2500 children, emptying both Homestead, FL and Carizzo Springs, TX influx facilities, as well as an increase in the discharge rates of migrant children from detention. However, the Administration is considering re-opening these facilities in late October and increasing family detention. We will gather on Oct. 12 to renew and amplify our call for this Administration to end the abuse, trauma, and detention of migrant children.
