Westridge OBOB '21-'22 signups
What is the Oregon Battle of the Books?

The Oregon Battle of the Books, OBOB, is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries in conjunction with a Library Services and Technology Act grant. Students in 3rd-12th grade, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints. There are 16 books chosen by state OBOB volunteers.

Teams of three to five divide up the books and read them in preparation for school “battles.” Only four members will be able to participate in a battle, so teams of five will need to create a rotating schedule so all members can participate. 3rd grade students need to be teamed with all 3rd graders, 4th and 5th graders can be on mixed grade teams.

Please sign up kids by Friday, November 12th to give us time to place as many students as possible on teams and also to give kids time to meet as teams and read, read, read  before February!

Westridge's OBOB competition will be held in February (whether in person or virtual is yet to be determined).

REQUIRED WAIVERS
The participant named above has permission to participate in the Westridge OBOB competition, to be held in the late winter 2022. I understand this event MAY be held VIRTUALLY and not in person this year. Parent or guardian INITIALS: *
While the total length of the event will depend on the number of teams that sign up and on the performance of any given team, I understand that the OBOB battle process will take several hours to complete and will include periods of down time between battle rounds. This may be 9-2 on a Saturday or multiple mornings before school. I acknowledge that my team will provide at least one parent or guardian coach who will be present throughout the competition if it occurs outside of school hours, and that the coach will be responsible for supervising all the team members throughout the event. I also acknowledge that food and quiet entertainment will not be provided by the organizers of the event other than possibly during a celebration at the event’s conclusion.  Parent or Guardian INITIALS:
It is recommended participants utilize Zoom or other video-conferencing software for team practice meetings (to be determined with their teammates). If meeting in-person with OBOB teammates outside of school, please follow all current health and safety recommendations to curtail the spread of COVID-19. Parent or Guardian INITIALS: *
If the event is held virtually, I understand that no moderator will be physically present with the student teams during any battle. I agree to discuss with my student the importance of fair play and the need to not use any outside aids during the competition. Parent or Guardian INITIALS: *
I understand that all OBOB events will be coordinated by parent or guardian volunteers and that no school or district personnel will necessarily be present whether a VIRTUAL or IN PERSON event. If held on a Saturday, Parent or guardian volunteers will not be able to issue medication to my child and  there will not be access to medication that has been left at the school in the event of a medical emergency. Parent or Guardian INITIALS: *
In consideration of this participant’s participation in the Westridge OBOB competition, I hereby release, waive, and discharge Westridge PTSO, the Event Coordinators, and any and all PTSO members, school personnel, and event volunteers from any and all liability to the participant, and to the participant’s legal representatives, assigns, heirs, and next of kin for any damage or injury to the participant or to any person or property arising out of participation in the competition, whether on Westridge Elementary premises or elsewhere.
