Malengo is an NGO which supports international education migration.
On the Uganda-Germany Program, we focus on supporting young Ugandans in becoming bachelor’s students in Germany (https://malengo.org/uganda-germany-program). We are preparing to welcome around 50-100 new scholars in Germany every year.
Malengo also launched the Kenya-Germany Vocational Training Program for Refugees (https://malengo.org/kenya-germany-tvet-program-refugees). Around 100 program participants will come to Germany in spring of 2026 to start vocational training in nursing.
Our scholars are supported by voluntary mentors. If you are interested in becoming a mentor now or later on either the Uganda-Germany Program or the Kenya-Germany Vocational Training Program for Refugees, keep reading! We will always need many mentors starting approx. March yearly.
Uganda-Germany Program: Details
Mentors help our scholars with their university applications, housing search, navigating their academics, getting used to their student life and managing challenges like dealing with German bureaucracy and finding a part-time job, as well as everything else that involves settling in Germany. We pay an allowance for the mentorship.
Phases of mentorship on the Uganda-Germany Program
Phase 1: In phase 1, mentors support scholars in their university and visa application. This phase is between March - July and a support of around 4h/week is required. Malengo pays 80€ for this phase.
Phase 2: In phase 2, mentors support scholars to find housing in Germany, prepare for their departure and settle in Germany. This phase starts between June and August and should last at least 1 year. A support of around 2h/week is required. Malengo pays 250€ for this phase.
Kenya-Germany Vocational Training Program for Refugees: Details
The exact structure of the mentorship on the Kenya-Germany Vocational Training Program for Refugees is currently being defined. However, mentors’ time commitment and allowance will be broadly similar to the Uganda-Germany Program.
What is expected from mentors? Mentors are a very crucial support pillar for our scholars and it is important that they are friendly and reliable. They should also be knowledgeable about life in Germany. It is equally required that the mentor is living in Germany for the second phase of the mentorship.
What is “nice to have” for mentors? Generally, German language skills and migration experience are helpful to have. For mentoring a scholar on the Kenya-Germany Vocational Training Program for Refugees, knowledge about the German vocational training system and experience working with refugees is beneficial, but again not required.
