First things first.
This is how to pronounce our funny name.
SKJAJA = SKUH-JAH-JAH
What is SKJAJA Fund?
SKJAJA Fund is a local non-profit organization who aims to level the playing field so all students in Chapel Hill-Carrboro can experience the joys and benefits of extracurricular and enrichment activities. In partnership with youth organizations and schools throughout the community, we provide scholarships and grants so students can explore their passions and interests without the systemic financial barriers that often make it impossible.
What is SKJAJA's PLAY it Forward program?
PLAY it Forward provides high-quality musical instruments and supplies to students who
are interested in pursuing band and orchestra, at no cost to families.
Who can make a request through SKJAJA's PLAY it Forward Program?
- Students who wish participate in band or orchestra but experience cost barriers associated with rental or purchase of musical instruments and supplies.
- Music educators who wish to support a student/students by supporting them through this application and making an instrument request.
(NOTE: SKJAJA typically partners with families affiliated with one of our partner organizations or who qualify for the Free & Reduced Lunch program. Exceptions for extenuating circumstances are made. Please let us know if you have questions. All inquiries and information in this application are confidential.)
How does the application process and program work?
- Students and their band or orchestra teacher discuss what instrument they will be playing and, in the case of string instruments, what size instrument they need.
- With guidance and support from the teacher, students and families complete the APPLICATION BELOW and submit it online.
- SKJAJA confirms the instrument selection with the student's teacher, and delivers the cleaned and refurbished instrument to the school for the student to have and enjoy!

you know sinks into the hearts and souls of people who are unable to
express it? --Nina Simone
