Fat Bear Week in the Classroom

Brown bears must eat a year's worth of food in fewer than six months to survive winter hibernation. Celebrate the success of brown bears and the ecosystems that support them during Katmai National Park's annual Fat Bear Junior and Fat Bear Week competitions. These are single elimination tournaments in which you choose the fattest Brooks River bear of the year. Learn more at fatbearweek.org.

We invite teachers to take the explore.org bear cams into the classroom and consider the different ways that bears find success in Katmai's challenging environment. Why are there differences in the ways bears look and act? How does each bear survive and how might their individuality be influenced by variation in brown bear traits?

Rangers from Katmai National Park and explore.org's resident naturalist Mike Fitz want to help your students answer those questions. They will record a special broadcast to answer students' questions about the bears seen on the bear cams in Katmai National Park.

Thank you everyone who submitted questions!
Although the deadline to submit questions from students has passed, we value the time of teachers. Therefore, we hope this will allow you to incorporate Fat Bear Week and the bear cams into your classroom at a pace that is appropriate and convenient. Thank you for your participation.
