Location: Encode Studio/ Elmontazah beach / Alexandria, Egypt.

Registration fees : 350 LE

Maximum participants : 5

Tutor : Ahmed Abouelkehir

About:

Sandworks is an experimental workshop that investigates digital and physical models of computational design and fabrication to develop prefabricated structures of sand. The workshop develops the ongoing research in sand tectonic system focusing on its structural and construction aspects to inform the design system. The aim is to investigate the potential of the material dynamics and structural performance to develop on-site prefabricated shell structures. Within a framework of an intensive week, digital models and 1:1 fabrication prototypes will be designed, fabricated, and assembled on the beach of Alexandria.

Participants will be introduced to Rhino and Grasshopper software, digital fabrication systems as well as physical modelling and prototyping techniques. The research is interested to correlate research to practice by realizing the design culture into the physical world. Therefore, it’s expected that the participants will get their hands dirty to realize the design proposals. If you find yourself ready for the challenge please join us by filling the application form, if not please feel free to follow the work progress on sandworks.org

The research started at The Architectural Association School of Architecture in London as a collaborative research at the DRL master program (Design research lab) in 2011. Currently the research is under development at the GSA (Geometry Structure and Architecture) laboratory at Malaquais School of Architecture in Paris as a PhD research.
