    SYNOPSIS

    Publishing is an important business for academics and people write for various reasons. Dissemination of research findings is an essential part of the scientific research process and writing in scientific journal is the accepted means of communication. Thus, the old adage “publish or perish” has never been truer. This lecture is aim to impart the specific knowledge and skills to write and publish scientific manuscripts in order to enhance research and publication. This lecture focuses on the process of writing a scientific paper, the structure of a paper, and how to prepare a scientific manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. The nuts and bolts of getting papers published will be emphasized. This lecture is useful for early career academics who are actively conducting research and need to develop competence in scientific writing skills for their career success.

    Background

    Ir. Dr. Tan Chou Yong, an Associate Professor, is currently serving the Department of Mechanical Engineering in University of Malaya. His research interests include nanomaterials, bioceramics, fuel cells technology, pigments and magnetic materials. To date, he has published more than 100 technical papers. Ir. Dr. Tan is also an active reviewer for various high impact research journals in his field of interest. His review has helped the editor in many ways to decide whether or not to publish an article. He has also completed his supervision on 6 PhD students and 15 Masters by Research students. In addition, Ir. Dr. Tan has also won more than 30 awards at numerous international/national exhibitions pertaining to his research work. He is a Chartered Engineer registered with the Engineering Council UK and is a Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), UK. He is also a Professional Engineer under the Board of Engineers, Malaysia and is a member of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM, Malaysia).
