Registration for "Educating English Learners (ELs) in the Regular Classroom" October 26, 2017. 8:00 am - 3:00 pm.
This workshop is presented by Alex Reyes, PhD Candidate at UNC Chapel Hill and former Spanish teacher; Rebecca Olsen, SIOP Trainer for Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools; and Simone Wertenberger, ESL/Migrant Education Director for Henderson County Schools. The morning session will focus on creating culturally inclusive classrooms, and will include exploring challenges for Latinx students beyond language and immigration. The afternoon session will focus on best practices for teaching English Learners and will include time for teachers to modify lesson plans using the new methodologies they have learned. Attendees should bring a copy of their students’ ESL scores and at least one lesson plan. Wifi will be available.

This workshop is open to teacher licensure students at UNC Asheville, teachers, principals, and guidance counselors in our partner school districts (Asheville, Buncombe, Henderson, Madison, McDowell, Transylvania, Francine Delany, Evergreen, and Art Space Charter), and teachers, principals, and counselors in UNC Asheville's GEAR UP partner school districts.

Participants will be recommended for .7 CEU for attending the workshop. As this workshop focuses on different types of literacy, we will recommend your school district count this workshop toward a literacy credit.

Registration closes once we reach 60 participants or October 18, whichever comes first.
