Sensory Needs and Behavioral Concerns in Children with registered occupational therapist, Dan Lemaire OT
These days, parents often hear that a child's needs, or the cause of their problem, might be "sensory" in nature. Often, this is paired with concerns about the child's behavior: these can include overly-energetic, non-stop activity, temper tantrums, difficulty with transitions, picky eating, and an inability to adapt to certain environments, such as school or preschool.
In this workshop we discuss the link between unmet sensory needs and behavioral challenges. We'll offer an overview of sensory processing: what it is, and what leads physicians, teachers, and others to identify this as a likely reason for behavioral issues. Parents will get insight into what causes kids' sensory systems to get overwhelmed, how they can prevent this from happening, and how to decrease the duration and intensity of behavioral concerns when they arise.
