AFRIMED: Protecting and restoring Mediterranean algal forests
WHAT IS AFRIMED PROJECT?

AFRIMED – ALGAL FOREST RESTORATION IN MEDITERRANEAN SEA IS AN EUROPEAN PROJECT ON THE RESTORATION OF THE DEGRADED MACROALGAL FOREST (Cystoseira). http://www.afrimed-project.eu/

AFRIMED has received funding from the European Union’s EMFF programme under grant agreement – EASME/EMFF/2017/1.2.1.12/S4/01/SI2.789059.

AFRIMED builds on the sussessful MERCES Marine ecosystem restoration in European changing seas project http://www.merces-project.eu/

AFRIMED SUMMARY
Macroalgal forest ecosystems, a productive and valuable habitat, play a key role in supporting biodiversity and complex food webs. However, their massive losses lead to a decrease in a multitude of goods and services. Consequently, prompt and novel actions are urgently required to stimulate their recovery.
Active restoration (e.g. the planting of seeds or seedlings) is one of the most profitable strategies to help return ecosystems to their original state in a reasonable time frame.

AFRIMED seeks to bring about a step change in this situation, by developing, implementing and promoting a protocol to effectively restore macroalgal forests in the Mediterranean Sea and to maximise the delivery of conservation, societal and economic benefits.

A combination of spatial analyses, laboratory and field studies, stakeholders’ awareness-raising activities and pilot restoration projects ensure the project’s objectives are achieved. In addition, developing a roadmap and best practices for restoring the forests provide a framework from which to up-scale the approach in other regions supporting large scale change.

The multi-disciplinary AFRIMED consortium includes 7 EU and 4 non-EU partners.
