Mentoring New and Preservice Teachers
This course supports teachers in mentoring roles for new and preservice teachers. Additionally, administrators needing of a refresher of Danielson's FFT, observing practice and engaging in strong conversations about teaching may find this training helpful. The course will begin with an in-depth view of observation frameworks such as Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Evaluation and the University of Washington’s 5D+ Observation Rubric. Next, participants will develop a strong understanding of the mentoring process including the benefits to mentoring, the roles of a mentor, coaching and communication skills, adult learning theory, generational differences, the coaching cycle, observing practice and questioning techniques, analyzing student work and coaching conversations. The course will include Danielson's (2007) "Framework for Teaching" as well as Lipton and Wellman's "Mentoring Matters" (2003 with 2017 yet-to-be-released supplements.)

Credit Options through Castleton University and SNHU is available. Participants taking the class for credit will demonstrate their coaching and analyzing skills through videoing and reflections which will be completed in the fall of 2017. A registration link will be sent to participants.

Participants who are Vermont-NEA members will also be able to register for Carol Ann Tomlinson's workshop on Differentiation and Personalization, taking place December 15th, 2017 at the DoubleTree in So. Burlington, at no additional cost.
