PROGRAMME:Jean SibeliusViolin Concerto in D minor, Op.47
Pyotr Ilych TchaikovskySymphony No. 1 in G minor, Op.13
A dramatic celebration of music in our sunny Singapore – BHSO commemorates the season with Tchaikovsky’s aptly-named Symphony No. 1 and the intensely virtuosic Sibelius Violin Concerto featuring soloist Yew Shan.
Singaporean violinist Yew Shan is BHSO’s Concertmaster and a gifted virtuoso whose last solo performance was that of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with the orchestra under the baton of Maestro Apo Hsu in 2018, which received outstanding reviews. (Read review)
One of the most famous and popular concertos in the violin repertoire, Sibelius’s Violin Concerto unlike other works in the genre allows for musical collaboration between soloist and orchestra; much of the work is symphonic in scope. The ethereal meandering beauty and style of Sibelian music contributed largely to the establishment of Finland’s national identity. Winter Daydreams, Tchaikovsky’s first symphony, brings folksongs and tales from Russia to Singapore in the form of lush orchestration and melody that is synonymous with its composer.
