Open Access For Journalists
Free Press In West Papua
#LetThemIn #WPFD2017
Open access to information systems is crucial to promote a healthy democracy. Society retains the right to obtain information required to participate in a meaningful way in the democratic process. Until now, journalists have been experiencing challenges in covering news in Papua in the form of restricted access, information “black hole”, safety and security concerns such as arbitrary arrests, and the “envelope journalism” that induces positive coverage of Papua. A fundamental issue is the discriminatory visa requirement against foreign journalists, restricting their access to Papua.

We want an open and accountable governance. We want the Indonesian government to open access to journalists and reform the access to information system for the media and guarantee press freedom, particularly in Papua.

These series of activities will coincide with the commemoration of the World Press Freedom Day 2017 jointly organized by UNESCO and the Government of Indonesia as co-hosts. More than ocial celebrations, these campaign activities will call out to the international community, especially media personnel, to take action on what the Indonesian Government is currently doing, which is restricting freedom and access to the press in Papua.

This activity will be carried out over a few days in the form of a discussion, installation exhibition, creative street acts, and art performances.

There will also be a launch of the global campaign program Open Access for Journalists – Free Press in West Papua.

These activities are organized by several organizations:
Perkumpulan JUBI, LBH Pers, Yayasan Satu Keadilan, PapuaItuKita, SuaraPapua.com and YLBHI.
