FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 journey - The challenges of hosting a global sporting event
The FIFA U17 World Cup was hosted by India in October 2017 in six cities, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Goa, Guwahati and Kochi. It was the most successful junior event in the history of FIFA with more than 1.3 million spectators across the six venues and unprecedented media coverage.
The tournament involved dealing with multiple stakeholders, FIFA, the Central Government, 6 different state governments, 8 global and 6 Indian sponsors and multiple civic bodies.
This talk is a attempt to take you through that journey and to try and understand what worked and what didn’t and the key learnings from delivering a successful global event, specially after the bad publicity and coverage of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
This talk, a project with high complexity and public exposure, will be delivered by Joy Bhattacharjya, who was the Project Director, Local Organising Committee(LOC) FIFA U-17 India 2017 from Nov 2014 - Mar 2018.
The Local Organising Committee (LOC) was an organization within the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and acted through a mandate by FIFA to host the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017. It was in charge of conducting the tournament after India was awarded the event by the world global/governing body for association football, FIFA in Dec 2013 with Ireland, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan being the rival bidders.
