FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PROOF OF PERFORMANCE AND SEED TIME?
A:
Seed time is not mandatory and can be submitted for all events -- it helps assign you to the correct heat for optimal competition.
Proof of performance *is mandatory* for certain events (see below) and helps ensure that you have basic competency in the event to reduce risk of injury to all athletes in competition.

Q: WHAT IS THE AUTOMARK, AND DO I NEED TO SUBMIT THIS FORM FOR IT?
A:
The automark is a qualification time, based on past Nationals results, that guarantees high-performing athletes entry into the fastest heat(s) of an event. All others submit seed times during registration (without using this form). Athletes who have met the automark standard must submit their automark qualification results using this form. Note: Any automark qualifier performances must be posted from December 1 prior to Spring Nationals, up to the close of registration for Spring Nationals.

Q: WHICH EVENTS REQUIRE PROOF OF PERFORMANCE?
A:
Shot put, discus, triple jump, and steeplechase.
If the event is not on this list, you don't need to submit a proof of performance.

Q: DO PRIOR PERFORMANCES HAVE TO BE FROM THE CURRENT SEASON?
A:
NO! They can be from ANY year (including high school, last year at Nationals) and from any meet you've ever competed in. This may change in the future, but we will allow ANY prior result and give you plenty of advance notice if this changes.

Q: I'VE NEVER RUN THE STEEPLECHASE BEFORE, SO... CAN I COMPETE?
A:
Maybe. For the sake of maintaining the legitimacy of competition, our strongest preference is that you have completed in the event in question before racing in the National Championship. For the current year (which may change in the future) we'll accept ANY prior result in ANY hurdle event as your prior performance. If you do not have a hurdle result, unfortunately, you are not eligible to compete.

Q: MY MEET WAS CANCELLED, AND NOW I DON'T HAVE A MARK THAT COUNTS FOR PROOF OF PERFORMANCE. NOW WHAT?
A:
See the question and answer above. If you have a mark/result for any hurdle event (ever), this will suffice under our current policy; please read the questions and answers above for more detail. If not, unfortunately, you will not be eligible to compete.
