Open Letter to Keir Starmer and David Evans on the subject of transphobia in the Labour Party
Dear Sir Keir Starmer M.P. and David Evans,

It thoroughly pains me to have to produce this letter on behalf of the included signatories. We believe that the Labour Party cannot claim to be a party of social justice and egalitarian values whilst our transgender comrades are so consistently harassed, minimised and attacked by senior Labour figures. Namely we wish to draw your attention to the repeated actions of Rosie Duffield M.P. which can only be described as transphobic.

Our trans comrades already suffer enough hardship - according to Stonewall 40% of trans people have been attacked or threatened with violence in the last five years, almost half of transgender people have attempted suicide at least once and 72% of trans young people have self-harmed. If you are as disgusted by these figures as we are, we ask that you show a commitment to improving the world our trans comrades live in, starting with making the Labour Party a safe and welcoming environment for all LGBTQ+ people, including those that self-identify as transgender.

Rosie Duffield has a long history of making our party less welcoming for transgender people. Two of her staffers, one her only LGBTQ+ member of staff, have quit her employment citing her ‘overtly transphobic’ views as a main reason for resigning. As early as 2017, Duffield has espoused transphobic views such as adamantly insisting only women have cervixes and doubling down on her exclusionary language when challenged. Given the ten-day tirade of anti-trans Twitter activity that followed, and her repeatedly transphobic actions since, her views cannot be attributed to a lack of education on the topic. More recently, Duffield has liked a tweet criticising Eddie Izzard’s right to determine her own pronouns, gender and sexuality. She has continued to like tweets expressing similar sentiments. Rather than accept fault or apologise, Duffield has reiterated her views and dismissed the genuine concern of comrades within the party as a “tedious communist pile-on.”

Given the statistics already stated, we ask - is the leadership of the Labour Party committed to ensuring the party is a safe and welcoming space for trans members? If the answer is yes, then why has no meaningful action been taken to discipline Rosie Duffield? Trangender people just want to live their lives free from oppression, they do not wish to be a pragmatic political issue that senior politicians can choose to ignore when it suits them. We implore you to show some leadership over this issue, to show to the world that the Labour Party will always stand with its trans comrades. Forced apologies and hiding behind bureaucratic procedure have not done anything to indicate the leadership of the Labour Party cares about trans folx.

We, the signatories of this letter, demand that the Parliamentary whip be removed from Rosie Duffield M.P. and her membership of the party be suspended until she recognises the genuine harm and hurt caused by her views and until trans comrades feel secure with her being a member of the party.

We look forward to the leadership committing to make the party a safe and welcoming place for trans individuals.

Yours Sincerely,
