Black Forest is a participatory art project recording the names and stories of Black lives lost to racial injustices and inequalities and planting trees for them. Ekene, plans to plant over 40,000 trees across all 50 states within 8 years. In collaboration with local governments, nonprofits, and volunteers, he's planted over 400 trees across parks, lawns, and sidewalks in 7 states: Michigan (Melvindale), Massachusetts (Boston), San Francisco, Florida (Florida City, Miami), Missouri (St. Louis), Rhode Island (Providence), and Washington (Seattle). At this event in the Bronx (known to some as “asthma alley”), we’ll plant about 40 trees in a park (TBA) in South Bronx to remember Black lives and better the environmental and intergenerational health of all communities in the area. We’re looking for volunteers to attend and/or participate!
