Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the 2022 Halifax Oyster Festival. The recent Hurricane Fiona postponed the scheduled September dates but we have been able to reschedule for November 25 & 26, 2022 and are looking forward to putting on the best seafood festival on the East Coast!

The Halifax Oyster Festival is in its sixth year and is run by the folks at The Coast. We have staff onsite that work to make the festival happen but we also activate a volunteer pool. By donating your time and skills, we are able to give back to our charity partner, Feed Nova Scotia.

Volunteers who are able to complete a four-hour shift are given a free ticket and an additional ticket at 50% discounted in lieu of payment plus an official Oyster Festival volunteer t-shirt.

This unique festival on the Halifax waterfront has a fun and upbeat atmosphere. Over 2,000 guests will be on site over the 2 days of tasting sessions, and your positivity helps make the festival fun for all the guests and oyster farms.

SET UP CREW (moving tables, helping with decor, putting up signage)

SHUCKING SQUAD (needed during all sessions) : Are you an experienced amateur shucker with a goal to hone your shucking skills? This is the job for you! As a volunteer oyster shucker you will be partnered with a farmer to help them shuck some of the 50,000 oysters that will be on site that weekend. Must already know how to shuck to do this job, no newbies please!

BAR STAFF (needed during all sessions): Serving beer, wine, and sparkling wine from behind the bar. There will be support by bar manager

SAUCE STATION (needed during all sessions): You will be the sauce bar manager in helping people sample hot sauces

GROUNDS KEEPER (needed during set up and clean up): Are you hyper-organized and enthusiastic about getting things done? Then this job is for you! This job is filled with small but important tasks that are easy to check off a list and make you satisfied af.

VIP TENT CREW (needed during all sessions): Help us keep the VIP tent tidy, bussing tables and assisting the VIP front of house manager.

WASTE MANAGEMENT (needed during all sessions): This role might sound a little “trashy” but if you love the planet, and you love keeping this big blue earth as clean as possible, then this dirty job is for you! You will walk the site throughout the session and, with the appropriate tools, pick up any garbage that has accumulated throughout the event. These are the un-sung heroes of the festival and we love you for it!

TICKET SCANNER (needed during all sessions): Are you fast and confident with technology (apps and smartphones)? Do you love the *beep beep* sound of the grocery scanner and crave that self-serve moment when you can scan your own items? Then this job is for you! No, you won’t be doing groceries but we can promise you that *beep beep* high we all know and love throughout your shift!

OYSTER BOOTH RUNNER (needed during all sessions): Are you looking for a volunteer experience where you can do a little of everything? Interested in helping and chatting with sea-farmers but can’t shuck? Like the idea of keeping the festival grounds clean and safe? Inspired by the opportunity to connect with all festival staff and volunteers? Then this job is for you! We need runners to help the farmers keep their booths stocked and ready for slurping.

PACK OUT CREW (Sunday morning): Help us pack out the site the morning after. This job involves loading festival gear into a truck and returning the site to pristine condition.

FOOD TICKET SALES (needed during all sessions): Did you have a lemonade stand when you were young and loved that entrepreneurial spirit that came over you when you called down your street “GET YOUR COLD DRINKS HERE”? Well this job is for you! You will walk around the festival selling food and drink tickets to attendees. Skills required: a loud voice, quick math skills and confidence in a crowd.

PEARL & EARL (needed during all sessions): Wear the famous mascot costume, dance and mingle. This job is for a performer, extrovert and loves having their photo taken.
