University Writing Services (UWS) Workshop Request Form

The entire UWS administrative team considers faculty, staff, adjuncts, graduate assistants, and student groups our partners in fostering a culture of critically conscientious writers on campus.

If you instruct any under/graduate class that incorporates writing skills into the curriculum, your students will benefit from one of the workshops below. We can tailor our workshops to your course's specific needs.

Please note that all of the workshop presentations end with a brief description about our FREE in-person and a/synchronous services as well as instruct students on how to create appointments using EAB Navigate - Student located under Applications on the Okta dashboard.

AY2024-25 UPDATES:

- UWS will offer workshops both in-person and via Zoom depending on the course format and instructor preferences.

- UWS has 4 different locations on campus: Busch Student Center Suite 331, Chaifetz Arena Champion Center Student Success Suite (exclusively for student athletes), Pius XII Memorial Library Room 320, and Trudy Busch Valentine School of Nursing Suite 114.

- Face masks are currently optional at all locations. UWS will provide a disposable mask when requested. Consultants will put on a mask when asked.

After completing the Google Form, either one of the UWS administrators or an experienced writing consultant will be assigned to facilitate the workshop. You will receive a confirmation email with the facilitator's name; a summary of your request with the date, time, and location of the workshop; as well as a separate Google Calendar notification which will automatically create a reminder the day of the workshop.

Which workshop would you like to request? *

We can tailor any of the workshops listed below to the needs of your students and/or the needs of your program/department/school.

New Graduate Student Orientation: 20 minutes; We assist departments when it comes to onboarding graduate students by presenting information about the different writing resources available to them on campus as they make progress in their respective programs (starting with coursework, submitting conference proposals, advancing to independent research, participating in writing groups/retreats, drafting chapters of their theses/dissertations, and revising).

New Graduate Student Orientation: 60 minutes; In addition to presenting information about the writing resources available to graduate students at different stages of their respective programs, we can also include any one of the listed workshops below on the same day and time (please add a checkmark next to any supplemental topic you would like to be covered during the department orientation).

Introduction to University Writing Services: 20 minutes; We provide a detailed description of the FREE in-person and a/synchronous writing services offered on campus so that students are more likely to make an appointment outside of class.

APA: 50 minutes; We provide an overview of APA formatting followed by an interactive workshop on citations, using the most recent edition.

Chicago: 50 minutes; We provide an overview of Chicago Style formatting followed by an interactive workshop on citations, using the most recent edition.

MLA: 50 minutes; We provide an overview of MLA formatting followed by an interactive workshop on citations, using the most recent edition.

Plagiarism, Paraphrase, Quotation, and Summary: 50 minutes; We teach students how to properly integrate and cite information (using different methods) from primary and secondary sources into their own writing.

Productive Peer Review Workshop: 30 minutes; We teach students how to offer positive and constructive feedback. Afterwards, the instructor may choose to conduct a peer review session or move on to a different topic for the remainder of the class.

Productive Peer Review Workshop: 50 minutes; We teach students how to offer positive and constructive feedback which is followed by an interactive workshop using a writing sample from UWS or a student model for a class assignment provided by the instructor.

Reflective Writing: 50 minutes; We teach students how to actively reflect on their first impressions, observations, opinions, and experiences through writing.

Thesis Statements: 50 minutes; We teach students how to identify, differentiate between, and craft informative statements versus argumentative claims.

To ensure accuracy on our end, please avoid using building abbreviations. For example, we prefer Busch Student Center 331 (instead of BSC 331) so that the assigned administrator or consultant knows exactly where to go on the day of the workshop.
