    Our Letter....

The Honorable Deval Patrick Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts April 2014 Dear Governor Patrick: Our world is in crisis. Despite repeated warnings by the world’s smartest scientists, humanity continues to burn larger and larger quantities of coal, oil, and gas. The increasing consumption of these deadly fuels is more than just a public policy challenge – it is an affront to our morality. For the sake of the poor and marginalized who are most vulnerable to global warming; for the sake of future generations who depend on us to leave them a habitable world; and for the sake of the many species and ecosystems imperiled by business as usual, we need to take strong, prophetic action on climate. As leaders of faith communities in Massachusetts, we stand with the representatives of Better Future Project / 350 Massachusetts and Students for a Just and Stable Future (SJSF) meeting with you on May 2 and we ask you to implement the platform outlined in the Climate Legacy Campaign: Ban the Worst, Build Only the Best, and Begin to Price the Rest (http://www.betterfutureproject.org/climate-legacy/). This platform would strengthen Massachusetts' response to this global crisis. We know that as Governor, you have done much to advance the goals of passing along a livable planet to future generations and preserving the natural world sacred to our faith traditions – signing and beginning to implement the Global Warming Solutions and the Green Communities Act, supporting the construction of Cape Wind and countless other green energy projects, bringing Massachusetts into the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and advocating for a tighter, more aggressive cap for the RGGI, and growing the clean energy economy in Massachusetts by leaps and bounds. We are thankful for your evident commitment to climate policies that are just and compassionate, and that serve the common good. But we also know that there is more to do, and that our state’s leadership has an important role to play in advancing policy solutions in other states, in our federal government, and in other countries around the world. We call upon you to use your remaining time as Governor on the three goals of the Climate Legacy Campaign: Ban the Worst, Build Only the Best, and Begin to Price the Rest. Massachusetts can be the first state in the nation to set electricity sector standards stringent enough to ban coal. We can send an unambiguous signal to other states like New York that the short-term economic benefits of fracking do not outweigh the short-term costs on our health and the long-term costs for our planet. We can hold the line against importing new Tar Sands into our state. We can make sure that Massachusetts energy sector investments are focused on projects we can truly be proud of – using less energy, using the energy we have to use more efficiently, and only sourcing new energy from truly green, renewable, clean sources like solar and wind. And we can begin the process of putting a market signal on the societal costs of fossil fuels by evaluating what an economy-wide carbon pricing system in Massachusetts would look like and how it should function. Governor Patrick, if the Commonwealth does these things, you will go down in history as having played an instrumental role in turning the tide when our species was in dire straits. History will note that you stood up for a clean energy future when many were ready to abandon all hope of avoiding catastrophic climate change. History will note that you did right by your constituents, right by your children, and right by your heart and soul. As leaders of faith communities, we add our moral voice in calling on you to prioritize climate action in your final year in office. Ban the Worst: ban coal, ban fracking, ban tar sands. Build Only the Best: invest in our future through wind and solar, not the past through more natural gas. Begin to Price the Rest: convene stakeholders to propose a carbon pricing system for your successors to evaluate and implement. With this suite of actions, you can get the Commonwealth on to the right track for a clean energy future. If you lead, you will have our support, and we will celebrate your courageous leadership. With prayerful hope for a better future and many blessings upon you for your leadership, (List of signers)
