Encouraging the Adoptee Voice and Educating the Media: Adoptee Writer's Experience
The adoptee's voice and experiences are often missing, exploited, or inaccurately portrayed by the media. I am Ann Peck, a National Society of Newspaper Columnists (NSNC) Ambassador, writer, and adoptee. I am working on a multi-phase project designed to change how journalists and communications professionals portray adoptees and our experiences.
The first phase of the project includes the following:
• Encourage adoptees' interest in writing about and publishing their personal stories, sharing their experiences with those reporting on the topic, and reading (or listening/watching) other adoptees' stories.
• Develop and present a workshop for journalists and communications professionals covering appropriate, adoptee-centric, and sensitive language they need to use when reporting or writing about adoption. This workshop will also explain the importance of including the adoptee's voice.
To ensure a cross-section of adoptee input, I will be making up to four introductory sections of the Adoptee Writer's Experience (AWE) available to interested adoptees on a complimentary basis during May.
Each section of AWE can accommodate a limited number of participants. Times and dates are in the response form below.
About the program:
The Adoptee Writer's Experience's goal is to give adoptees confidence in writing their adoption story. Whether you are writing for yourself or desire to share your writing with the world, you'll find inspiration through AWE.
We'll spend our time together brainstorming topic ideas and learning how to focus our writing based on individual goals. We'll cover strategies and techniques for dealing with doubts, fears, and imposter syndrome, which are all-too-common forms of resistance that show up in creative work. Each session will include time spent on discussion, writing, and sharing our written work.
The Adoptee Writer's Experience strives to create a safe space for adoptees to explore writing about their adoption stories. Each session takes place via Zoom, and due to the intimate nature of personal story writing and discussion, appearing on video for the entire session is required of all participants.
I hope you'll join us!
