Sustainability Alliance of Southwest Colorado Board of Directors Application
Background on SASCO:
The Sustainability Alliance of SW Colorado (SASCO) is a regional non-profit that was initiated in 2001 and formally founded in 2006 to incorporate sustainability into local community activities in Southwest Colorado. To fulfill its mission, the Sustainability Alliance of SW Colorado works in a variety of capacities, including:
● Offer coordination and connections to diverse individuals and groups working to fulfill community needs;
● Develop and maintain a comprehensive and public listing of community needs and resources;
● Research best practices adopted elsewhere to foster sustainable communities;
● Communicate with and educate the community about choices that affect sustainability;
● Undertake or support specific projects that foster sustainability;
● Pursue funding initiatives to support local sustainability efforts;
● Educate the public about implications for sustainability of proposed public policy initiatives;
● As resources permit, coordinate sustainability efforts on a regional scale in Southwestern Colorado and on a bioregional scale in the Four Corners region.

Past examples of SASCO’s efforts include having been the first home of the “Farm to School” program, the creation of “Local First” until it became it’s own separate organization, facilitating the drafting of Durango’s regional Clean Energy Action Plan (CEAP), as well as, contributing to the drafting of La Plata County’s 2001 Comprehensive Plan. Currently, SASCO focuses on adding critical capacity, resource support and expertise to the campaign to elect a progressive majority to the La Plata Electric Association’s Board of Directors. Additionally, we have launched a Durango Chapter of Green Drinks that acts as a hub for green minded individuals in our community. As our Board Membership expands, we are excited to adopt new projects and initiatives that address regional sustainability.

New Board Member Outreach:
We are currently seeking additional board members to strengthen existing efforts. These new board members will help identify ways that we can more effectively tackle current initiatives and bring vision and capacity to additional sustainability efforts that we can address in our region.
