Community Blanket Exercise

The Blanket Exercise:

A Learning Activity Exploring the Relationship Between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Peoples

This is an experiential activity that explores the 500-year relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Participants are guided through a narrative and experiential visual of many of the policies and events that have shaped Canada in the context of the treatment of the Indigenous People of this land. Learners will experience a sense of the loss of land, a way of life, and the impacts that many Indigenous People deal with to this day.

This participatory workshop will help participants understand how colonization of the land we now know as British Columbia and Canada has impacted the people who lived here long before settlers arrived. Through this exercise participants will explore the nation-to-nation relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada, how this relationship has been damaged over the years, and how they can work toward reconciliation. This version of the Blanket Exercise has been developed in partnership with the BC Teachers’ Federation, in order to make this resource available in BC schools.

Please fill out the questionnaire below if you would like to participate.
