Urban Permaculture 101
SMU GROW is launching 4 part series of workshops to introduce basic permaculture techniques and philosophies with the very people who were first involved in getting our SMU GROW plot going.

Here are the details:

Dates: June 16 and 30, July 14 and 28 (alternate Sundays)
Time: 10am to 1.30pm (light refreshments will be provided during tea break)

Cost:

Style: Combination of indoor sessions and hands-on workshops at SMU GROW plot and Fort Canning
Venues: The Hive at the Learning Commons, Li Ka Shing Library, SMU GROW plot and Fort Canning

Session 1 – June 16
Overview of SMU GROW & Sustainability; Starting Your Urban Farm; Microgreens

Programme:
1. Introduction to SMU Grow & Sustainability
2. Microgreens Theory
- Weather conditions
- Environment
- Rainwater harvesting
3. Break
4. Outdoor Garden Session
- Microgreens practical hands on session
- Garden design

Session 2 – June 30
Composting 101 and Going To Seed

Programme:
1. Introduction to Composting Theory Session
2. Composting at Home Theory Session
3. Break
4. Nursery Basics & Plant Propagation Techniques (Stem Propagation, Seed Sowing, etc)
5. Outdoor Garden Session
- Plant propagation

Session 3 – July 14
Local vegetables and edible flowers; design and maintenance of green spaces; planting techniques

Programme:
1. Edible Flowers Talk
2. Design and Maintenance of Green Spaces
3. Break
4. Planting Techniques - Companion Planting, 3 Sisters
5. Local Flowers and Vegetables Outdoor Garden Session
- Flowering Plants and Local Vegetables
- Designing and Maintaining Green Spaces

Session 4 – July 28
Foraging; Edible Weeds; Medicinal and Culinary Herbs

Programme:
1. Foraging Tour
- Tour Farquhar garden at Fort Canning, walk around SMU/Armenian/Fort Canning to learn about edible weeds
- An introduction to lesser known ingredients - at SMU Grow
2. Break with a 'foraged' drink
3. Edible Weeds, Garden Herbs and their Medicinal/Culinary Properties
- Participants get to sow weed seeds, and garden herbs to kickstart growing at home
