WHAT IS GIRLS ROCK ASHEVILLE?
Girls Rock Asheville (GRAVL) is a nonprofit camp that empowers youth ages 8-14 who self-identify as girls, trans (across the gender spectrum), and/or gender non-binary, of all backgrounds and abilities, through music education. No experience is required, and we supply all of the instruments and gear. Campers will make bands, create a song together, and perform for their peers and community at the end-of-the-week showcase. We offer full and partial sponsorship for campers whose families are facing economic barriers to participation. GRAVL values diversity of age, race, economic status, gender expression, size, physical ability, developmental ability, musical interest, learning style, nationality, religion, citizenship status, and sexual orientation.
We are a community-centered, volunteer-led organization.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO ATTEND CAMP?
Any youth age 8-14 who identifies as a girl, transgender, non-binary, gender-queer, gender-fluid, or questioning is eligible to attend GRAVL. Campers do not need to have any prior musical experience to thrive at camp!
ABOUT GRAVL CAMP:
At GRAVL, campers build confidence and create community with each other while writing music, learning about gear and the mechanics of sound, and participating in a range of empowering workshops and performances by local bands.
Campers will forms their very own bands and spend the week writing an original song with their group. Each day campers will also get to attend workshops (including, but not limited to, Music Herstory, Zine-Making, Songwriting, Synths and Electronic Music, Self-Defense, Screenprinting, and more!), receive instrument on their chosen instrument, and attend performances and Q&A from local queer and women musicians.
Lunch and two snacks are provided to all campers daily.
Campers will learn:
-to support each other and work collaboratively
-songwriting skills, musical confidence, and instrument basics
-to think about equity and how they might use music to create a more just world
-to be in community with a diverse group of people who also share their identities
-to be supported in taking creative risks and being vulnerable in their creativity with their peers
Does My Camper Need To Bring Equipment To Camp?
No, all equipment will be provided by the camp. No experience or equipment necessary.
However, if your camper has an instrument they'd like to bring to camp, they are more than welcome!
WHEN & WHERE IS CAMP:
Camp is July 15-19, 2024 and our camper showcase will be Saturday, July 20th.
This year, GRAVL camp will take place at Rainbow Community School, in their Omega Middle School building located at 62 State Street, Asheville, NC 28806.
The camp day runs from 9am-4pm.
Our showcase location on Saturday is still TBD.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?:
Our suggested enrollment fee for this one-week camp is $150 per participant. Girls Rock is proud to offer full and partial scholarships to families that request a reduced fee, no questions asked. Additionally, if your family can comfortably pay more than the suggested amount, your added donation allows us to sponsor more campers.
Your family's ability to pay will *not* affect your child's chance of admission to camp.
The Girls Rock is a nonprofit organization funded 100% by donations from our community. We are proud that, through this support, we are able to keep our programs accessible to low-income youths who may not have opportunities to go to summer camp otherwise.
