Dear Parents and Guardians of Grade 7 students:
Each year there are 7th Grade students who demonstrate that they have the readiness and work ethic to be successful in a high school level science class in place of an eighth grade science course. For the upcoming 2023-2024 school year, the course offered will be Biology. Therefore, we would like to take this opportunity to inform you of the process that will be used to consider our Grade 7 students for science placement in the 2023-2024 school year.
The middle school Science department will apply the Selection Criteria Matrix in the Spring of 2023 to determine the readiness of students who wish to be considered for acceleration in science in place of an eighth-grade science course. The Selection Criteria Matrix will include:
The Grade 7 Science Second and Third Quarter grade scores
A teacher feedback score based on a student performance rubric
STAR ELA and Math Spring Assessment (Spring 2023)
STEM (Math & Science) Skills Assessment (Spring 2023)
In order to be considered for acceleration in science, Grade 7 students MUST take the STEM exam developed by the YCSD teachers.
Students who meet the criteria for placement in a high school level Biology class will attend class at MESMS. This class will culminate with a NYS Regents Exam. Grade 8 students who successfully complete the Biology course will earn one high-school unit of credit.
As we proceed through the school year, your child’s performance in his/her Grade 7 classes will be an important consideration for his/her Grade 8 schedule of classes.
Please discuss this important matter with your child. If you're interested in this opportunity, this HS Biology Screening Permission form must be completed by Monday, February 13, 2023 .
If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s science teachers and/or guidance counselor. Thank you for your continued partnerships.
