From Article 5 to 360 Degrees:                  Expanding NATO's Definition of Security Over 75 Years
Istanbul Policy Center is delighted to share our upcoming event “From Article 5 to 360 Degrees: Expanding NATO's Definition of Security over 75 Years,” which is generously sponsored by NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division. The event will be held at IPC Karakoy on November 7, 2024.

Over the past 75 years, NATO has faced a myriad of conflicts and threats, from the Cold War to conflicts in the Balkans, from the War on Terror to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In today’s increasingly unstable world, however, threats to NATO stem not only from traditional conflicts but everyday life and practices, threatening not only governments and militaries but also societies and individuals. To effectively combat these threats, NATO has adopted a 360-degree security approach to take a comprehensive look at these threats from every direction. Such an approach has put hybrid, emerging, and human-centric threats at the center of NATO’s security strategy alongside its three core tasks. This approach has led NATO to expand its priorities, including topics such a disinformation, climate change, and gender-sensitive approaches.

Our event aims to bring together policymakers, decision-makers, academia, civil society, students, and the public for a one-day event on NATO’s 360-degree security approach as the Alliance celebrates its 75th anniversary. Following a discussion of NATO's major priorities and challenges throughout its 75-year legacy, the event will consist of three panels of experts who focus on more specific subjects relevant to NATO’s updated security focus: dis/misinformation, women, peace, and security (WPS), and climate security. As these topics are rarely viewed in Türkiye through a security lens, let alone as priorities for NATO, this event seeks to encourage participants to think about NATO specifically and security more generally in a broader context in line with NATO’s 360-degree security approach.

Please mark your calendars for this event, which will take place both in person and online. The event will be held in English with simultaneous translation to Turkish.

More details will follow soon. We hope that you can join us for this lively discussion!
