Parent Leadership Indicators Self-Assessment Tool
This tool was created by The Parent Leadership Indicators Project Team at the Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools at NYU. For more information, please visit
Parent leadership initiatives (PLIs) are all different from one another. Despite these differences, we have identified 13 qualities that are vitally important to PLIs. This tool supports organizations to reflect on their alignment with these 13 qualities.
We have included examples of what each indicator can look like in practice. Since all PLIs are a bit different, some examples may speak to some initiatives and not to others. This tool is designed to allow your organization to define what each indicator looks like for you.
The purpose of this tool is for you to identify areas of strengths, as well as areas where you would like to improve. This tool is not meant to be used as an evaluation of your program.
We recommend that you form a team consisting of 5-10 staff, parent leaders, and any other individuals who know your program well to complete this self-assessment. You may ask every member of the team to take the self-assessment first individually and then discuss each indicator as a team.
